On looking slowly

A painting is finished when the looking has nowhere left to hurry.

I used to think a studio day was measured in hours of paint. It is not. It is measured in how long I can remain with a colour before I try to improve it.

Slow looking is not a temperament I was born with. It is a practice, like rinsing brushes, like remembering to eat. Some afternoons I sit with a mango until it becomes architecture. Some afternoons I fail and scroll, and the room becomes smaller.

If the work on this site feels unhurried, that is the point. I would rather a painting wait for you than shout across a room.
